When President Obama meets with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on May 18th, it is critical that he recognize the challenges facing the middle east today are extraordinary & require new and pragmatic solutions.
Israel continues to make painful sacrifices for peace while continuing to be the victim of daily terror attacks upon it's citizenry. we need a real “win-win” solution, not more of blaming Israel which is no one’s gain”.
In 2003, Israel agreed to implement the Roadmap to Peace, a performance-based document providing a framework for a two-state solution and ...calls for an end to Palestinian violence and terrorism - including requiring all Palestinian institutions to end incitement against Israel. However, while Israel's schoolbooks teach tolerance, Palestinian textbooks, media and official cultural events continue to promote and celebrate terrorism - even among children
After being forced to defend their citizens from Hamas rockets, Israel unilaterally ended its 22-day defensive efforts in Gaza just hours before President Obama was sworn in as president. Israel took these steps in the hope that, with a new American president, Iran-backed terrorists in Gaza would stop shooting rockets into Israel.
Since President Obama was sworn in on January 20th, Iran-backed terrorist groups in Gaza have fired more than 200 rockets and mortars at Israel Additionally, Hamas continues to hold Israeli Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit in captivity after kidnapping him nearly three years ago in an unprovoked cross-border raid on Israel in which the terrorists killed two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and wounded four others. Shalit’s captors, ignoring the Geneva Conventions, continue to deny the Red Cross access to the wounded soldier or provide any other information about Shalit’s welfare.
Today Iran continues it's process of building nuclear weapons while arming, funding and training Hamas and Hezbollah. Iran-backed Hamas still controls Gaza and its actions are devoted to the destruction of Israel. Hamas’s charter states, " the time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees which will cry, O Muslim there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him !"
It is imperative that President Obama recognize the threat Iran poses not only to middle east security but that of the united states and others.
